Play Hard, Smart, & Together!
Building a Program Identity
Every program needs an identity — a simple phrase that defines how you play and how you live.
At Southside Hoops, ours is this:
Play Hard. Play Smart. Play Together.
Those six words have shaped everything we do — from off-season workouts to postseason runs. They remind us who we are when things go well and anchor us when they don’t. But like most values, they don’t mean much unless they come to life daily.
Here are four tangible ways to help your team turn words into culture.
1. Model It as a Staff
If we want our players to play hard, smart, and together, then our staff has to coach that way, too.
At Southside Hoops, we call it staff synergy — the belief that how we work together shapes how our team plays together.
I’ve been blessed to coach alongside Coach Simpson, Coach Cooley, and Coach Keller for over two decades. They’re far more than assistants — they’re trusted partners and co-architects of our program’s culture. Their fingerprints are everywhere.
Coach Simpson embodies Play Smart. His steadiness, preparation, and loyalty have been constants since day one. I often say, “Show me anything, and I’ll show you everything.” His quiet consistency off the court becomes our team’s consistency on it.
Coach Cooley connects past and present, using film and storytelling to remind players what it looks like to Play Hard and put the team first.
Coach Keller envisioned THE TUNNEL, the physical space that captures who we are — a daily walk through our shared mission and mindset. See below for pictures and video of THE TUNNEL.
I often emphasize our Strong R’s — teaching players to respond, not react. Every team faces adversity: mediocre teams are destroyed by it, good teams survive it, but great teams get better because of it.
“A hammer shatters glass, but forges steel.”
Each of us leans into our strengths, but we all teach the same message. We expect every player to defend, handle, and shoot — even though some excel more naturally in certain areas. The same is true for our staff. We all model and teach The Strong R’s and The Titan Way; we just take the lead in different aspects we value most.
That alignment is what makes us strong.
We’re better together — always.
Coach takeaway:
Have a “staff identity” meeting. Ask: What do we each model best? Where do we overlap? When coaches live the same values they preach, players notice.

2. Legacy Clips
Culture is what your players see, not just what they hear.
Coach Cooley, who’s been alongside me for 21 years, is a master at showing what “Play Hard” looks like. He curates clips of former Titans diving on the floor, taking charges, sprinting back in transition, and celebrating teammates. Those moments tell our current players, “This is who we are.”
Players quickly realize that hustle, sacrifice, and selflessness are the plays that get celebrated. Once they see it, they start to live it.
Coach takeaway:
Use film to highlight the habits you want — effort, toughness, communication. Label them clearly. Your film should teach your values, not just your X’s and O’s.
3. The Tunnel
We actually do have words on the wall — literally.
When you walk into Titan Arena, you pass through what we call THE TUNNEL, a vision brought to life by Coach Keller, another loyal and committed assistant who’s poured into our program for years.
It makes me smile because, in some ways, The Tunnel is everything we say culture isn’t — words on a wall. But in another way, it’s the best snapshot of who we are. It’s where our players see our Why Mission Statement, our mantras Play Hard – Play Smart – Play Together, ACE Factor (Attitude-Concentration-Effort), and my personal favorite, written across the floor:
“Nothing great is ever achieved without enthusiasm!”

The floor of THE TUNNEL
The walls are filled with dozens of cues and reminders — the language of Southside Hoops:
KYP (Know Your Personnel). When in doubt, space out. OBC (Offensive Board Coverage). S = E/T (Success Equals Effort Over Time). To name a few/four.
These words tell the story of our habits, but more importantly, our players live them every day. They walk through The Tunnel before every practice and every game — literally walking through the culture they helped build.
Coach takeaway:
Your program’s language matters. Create a space — physical or digital — that reminds your team daily who they are and what they value. Then make sure they live it when they step onto the court.
4. Recognize, Reinforce & Connect It
What you celebrate will grow — but it has to be real.
Every week we name a Practice Competition Champion. It’s based on a simple scoring system that tracks who meets shooting standards and wins drills or scrimmages. Nothing complicated — just a consistent way to reward skill and competitiveness. The goal is to praise what’s done in training, not just what shows up on game night.
That’s something Coach Simpson has modeled for years. His quiet, disciplined approach reminds all of us that the real work — and the real growth — happens in the unseen moments. His steadiness in the day-to-day gives weight to everything we preach about consistency and preparation.
We also use Player Spotlights — quick shoutouts after practice or games and occasional social-media posts — to recognize players who embody our Five Pillars: Unity, Passion, Humility, Servanthood, and Thankfulness. Those small moments of gratitude keep our values front and center.
And then there are the aforementioned Legacy Clips — film of former Titans taking charges, diving on the floor, or celebrating a teammate’s success. They serve as living proof that our culture has roots and remind players they’re part of something bigger than themselves.
At the end of tough practices, games, or long weeks, we often say:
“Be that Titan we’ll talk about one day.”
It’s not about stats or accolades. It’s about leaving a legacy of attitude, concentration, and effort that future Titans will study and model.
Coach takeaway:
Recognition doesn’t need to be fancy. Find one or two consistent ways to celebrate effort, attitude, and unselfishness. When recognition matches your values, it reinforces your identity — and connects your current team to the legacy you’re building.
Final Thought
Building culture isn’t about catchy slogans or pregame speeches. It’s about shared ownership — from the coaching staff to the last player on the roster.
At Southside Hoops, we simply believe this:
When coaches and players live the same values, your culture becomes your competitive edge.
So define your identity. Model it. Reinforce it.
Because when everyone in your program is aligned around the same “why,” you don’t just play hard, smart, and together — you become it.
